Culture or Wickedness? - Life Issues With The Obasi Twins

Should it be so? A question that got us arguing for some minute, it went on for a while and it looked as if it was not going to end because we stood on our points and iya Ejima(our mum) was not ready to compromise on what she believes too, because it is the Tradition.

Tradition!!! We shouted, then its nonsense and should be scrapped and thrown into d garbage can Culture or Tradition is one of the things that has got questions pumping in my heart. In our society we have many cultures and traditions, some which I consider stupid, forgive me if you think am wrong, but I have not said all traditions are stupid, but I have found out that there are some of it that should be scrapped out but you find them waxing stronger and stronger thereby making it look as if it cannot be kicked out.

Let me narrow this discussion down to my hometown. We hail from Abia state, Isialangwa North LGA precisely, pardon me if you are from there am not trying to paint us bad so you don't have to call me the black sheep of the family am just trying to lay my points on solid facts.

First, talking about the way we celebrate wedding or give our daughters hand in marriage, it is absolutely unheard of, a young man who desires to get married and start up with his life is faced with some 'Blood sucking' expenses which he may not quickly recover from after the so called marriage right is over, let me digress from here and talk about the one which punches my spirit to bleed, Our funerals, God!  We do what they refer to as 'right' for the dead as if we are paying for a magician that will bring them back to life. People will always tell me about the killing expenses they made during their loved ones funeral and I will always argue and say it can't happen, but we had the bitter taste of the bitter kola when we lost our grandma, I could not believe my ears when I heard what the kinsmen were requesting for as funeral right for the dead, from my calculations it is enough to train up a child to a secondary school level, I got shocked when I asked Iya Ejima what was going to be the contribution of these kinsmen and she said nothing, so I asked her again why should we do all the things they have listed and she replied "that is the way it is done" that was when I asked myself this question "isthis Culture or Wickedness .

I have found out that the reason why their so called tradition can't end is because at a point when same was melted to us,we complained and felt the pain but when it was writing this article my mum asked me why am I disturbing myself because I can't change anything, it been there right from time and not me nor the church can change it because "Tradition senior you and the church", but my believe is that one day all the ill tradition and culture we have in our society will be erased. Culture is a beautiful thing and am proud of the cultures we have but as for the ill traditions I know we will put a stop to them one day. Let me just stop here to save my ink for another day.
